About the speakers
Dr Amokura Kawharu
Dr Amokura Kawharu practised commercial law in Auckland and Sydney between 1997 and 2004 and then worked in academia from 2005 to 2020, specialising in commercial and investment arbitration, property law and international economic regulation. Amokura is co-author of Williams & Kawharu on Arbitration and has published widely in the arbitration law field. She is a barrister of the High Court of New Zealand, a Fellow of the Arbitrators’ and Mediators’ Institute of New Zealand, and a Fellow Ahurei of the Royal Society Te Aparangi.
Amokura has a BA/LLB (Hons) from Waipapa Taumata Rau | Auckland University, an LLM from the University of Cambridge and a PhD from Te Herenga Waka | Victoria University of Wellington.
Her iwi are Ngati Whatua and Ngapuhi.
Nicola Swan
Nicola is a partner in Chapman Tripp’s litigation practice, and leads the firm’s international law practice, with a busy international arbitration and sanctions focus. Nicola is also widely recognised for her expertise in climate change, sustainability and ESG, and is counsel on a wide range of advisory and litigation work in these areas. Nicola started her career at Russell McVeagh, worked in the international law team at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, and then spent eight years in London at US firm Debevoise & Plimpton LLP before returning to New Zealand in 2020.
Robert Kirkness
Robert appears as counsel before international courts and tribunals in disputes between states, disputes between foreign investors and states, and disputes between commercial parties. He has appeared as counsel in a number of high-profile investment treaty disputes, including for the foreign investors in Maiman v Egypt, Ampal-American v Egypt, Rusoro v Venezuela and Adria Group v Croatia, and for states, including the Republic of Korea, Vietnam and Romania. He has also served as arbitrator in international commercial disputes. Robert is ranked for international arbitration by all major legal directories, including Who’s Who Legal, which recognises him as a Global Thought Leader.
