Learn from the best
Co-directed by AMINZ President Nicole Smith FAMINZ (Arb) and Director of Professional Studies (and Past President) Royden Hindle FAMINZ (Arb), it brings together some of New Zealand's top practitioners in the field of arbitration.
Across three intensive days, you will undertake a range of practical and theoretical workshops that will allow you to engage in an arbitral process confidently and effectively.
Programme Directors
Nicole Smith
Nicole Smith is a specialist in all aspects of arbitration, experienced dispute resolution lawyer, and the President of AMINZ.
Nicole sits as an arbitrator and adjudicator on New Zealand and international disputes and chairs the Investigating Panel of the NZ Registered Architects Board. Recent appointments have included disputes about the construction of a hotel, management of a sports facility, cross-lease disputes, and disputes involving issues of tikanga and whakapapa.
She has a strong interest in issues associated with climate change and is a member of the ICC Task Force on Disputes involving Climate Related issues and has worked with the IBA on climate change issues. She also recently authored a chapter on a claim before the Waitangi Tribunal on climate change issues.
Nicole worked for four years in the litigation group at Simpson Grierson and 9 years in the international arbitration group of Clifford Chance in London. She set up as an independent arbitration consultant in 2006. She was admitted as a Barrister and Solicitor in New Zealand in 1993 and was admitted in the UK in 2000. She is a Fellow (Arb) of AMINZ and a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (United Kingdom).
She is the author of the NZ report on the Recognition and Enforcement of New York Convention Awards (ICC Special Supplement).
Nicole is based in Tauranga and practices as a Barrister sole from Mauao Chambers.
Royden Hindle
Royden Hindle is an experienced commercial arbitrator, construction adjudicator and mediator with over 40 years of practice experience.
He has been the AMINZ Director of Professional Studies since 2015, an AMINZ Council member from 2011 to 2020 and a Past President. He is also a member of both the AMINZ Mediation and Arbitration Panels.
Royden was a litigation partner at Simpson Grierson before moving to the bar in 1996. He became an AMINZ Fellow in 2001 and received the Sir Ronald Davison Award for Award Writing in the Fellowship Assessment Programme for that year.
From 2002 to 2011 Royden was Chair of the Human Rights Review Tribunal. Since returning to private practice in late 2011 he has regularly been engaged as an arbitrator, construction adjudicator or mediator in a wide variety of commercial matters.
Royden is also a Principal Arbitrator, Evaluator & Mediator with the New Zealand Disputes Resolution Centre, and a Resolution Institute-accredited mediator. He is a Deputy Chair of the Health Practitioners Disciplinary Tribunal.
Royden has taught Arbitration at AUT University since 2013. He is currently based at Bankside Chambers.
