Honouring a pioneer of international arbitration in New Zealand: Sir David Williams KNZM, QC

On 16 February 2022, AMINZ held Arbitration Day in honour of Sir David and his enormous  contribution to the development of arbitration in New Zealand.

‍It was a fitting tribute to Sir David, with some of New Zealand’s top arbitration lawyers from around the globe joining us to provide insights and updates on developments in arbitration – both international and domestic.

‍I was also thrilled that the day was so well attended (in person and online) which shows the level of esteem in which Sir David is held.

‍A Special Volume of the Auckland University Law Review containing select papers from Arbitration Day has since been published in Sir David’s honour. Bankside Chambers is proud to sponsor the publication of this Special Volume.

The Volume includes the following papers:

Editorial: Sir David Williams KNZM, QC by Dr Anna Kirk

Special Features: From 1967 to 2021: The Importance of Student Legal Research bu Samantha Noakes and Hugo Wagner-Hiliau

Articles:

  • The Investor/Investment Dichotomy in Investment Treaty Law by Dr Simon Foote QC and Samuel Jeffs

  • Witness-Gating in International Commercial Arbitration: Guidelines for the Gatekeepers, by James M. Hosking

“I was quite overwhelmed with the generous tribute Anna Kirk paid to me in the Editorial. I was also very impressed with the separate Articles, most of the authors of which were Bankside connected lawyers, i.e. Simon Foote QC, Sam Jeffs, James Hosking, and Diana Qiu.” – Sir David Williams KNZM, QC
