Fostering diversity, leadership development, and learning opportunities: AMINZ Scholarships
The 2021 AMINZ Scholarships, announced April of last year, were a resounding success with a number of high calibre applications. These were narrowed down to two rising stars who have since held their respective scholarships for the past 12 months; Sharnika Leleni, the AMINZ 2021 Determinative Scholar; and Tunisia Set Ārena, the AMINZ 2021 Consensual Scholar.
The scholarships were set up to encourage young professionals to engage with dispute resolution, provide leadership development opportunities and encourage diversity. The learning goes both ways – with our scholars reporting back over the past year to the AMINZ Council on opportunities and feedback on how we can further enhance our diversity and inclusivity within both the Institute and the wider dispute resolution sector. Their involvement with AMINZ has been pivotal in our ongoing diversity journey.
Alongside having mentors from the Institute and taking part in observation days in their respective dispute resolution fields, both Sharnika and Set spoke at the AMINZ 2021 Conference. Sharnika discussed tribunal secretaries as a means of developing diversity in arbitrations and Set spoke on mediating indigeneity, both of which were highly insightful and challenged attendees thinking.
It's been a privilege to have had Sharnika and Set as our 2021 scholars, and we’re looking forward to seeing the positive impacts they will continue to have on the sector as their careers grow.
As their scholarship year comes to an end, we are now on the lookout for our 2022 scholars. These will run in the same way as last year, with our two new scholars selected by the AMINZ Diversity Committee – one Determinative Scholar (focusses on arbitration), and one Consensual Scholar (focussed on mediation).
We are delighted to have two fantastic sponsors on board this year helping us raise the profile of the awards.
DETERMINATIVE SCHOLARSHIP
"The more diverse and inclusive we are as a legal profession, the better outcomes we are able to deliver for our clients and communities. Russell McVeagh is pleased to support this year's Determinative Scholarship which aims to foster the development of diverse talent through support, encouragement and learning opportunities for a potential future leader of the profession."

CONSENSUAL SCHOLARSHIP 2022
“Domain Name Commission is an organisation centred around leading the prevention and resolution of .nz domain name disputes. As part of our commitment to leading best practice dispute resolution, we are pleased to sponsor AMINZ’s consensual scholarship.
Our sponsorship this year is in celebration of twenty years of self regulation of the domain name industry. We’ve spent the past 16 years providing an alternative dispute resolution scheme which offers free mediation services and paid for expert determination. The Commission’s dispute resolution service is one of New Zealand’s earliest examples of an ADR scheme where mediations took place online and by phone without in person meetings. In 2022 the Service is piloting an end to end online experience.”
Domain Name Commissioner Brent Carey
