Young AMINZ x NZLS Young Lawyers - "Kiwis Overseas" Panel

Young AMINZ, NZLS Auckland Young Lawyers and NZLS Wellington Young Lawyers are excited to bring you the ‘Kiwis Overseas’ panel discussion where we will hear from three renowned international arbitration lawyers that have successfully kickstarted their careers overseas.

This will be an in-person event in Auckland and Wellington with drinks and nibbles provided at 5.30pm in each location. Our panellists will be zooming in from their respective locations, so virtual attendance is also available from 6:30pm onwards. Meet the Panellists

James Herbert

James is Counsel at Gaillard Banifatemi Shelbaya Disputes in Paris. His experience includes representing claimant and respondent parties in high-profile commercial and investment treaty arbitrations.

James started his career in Paris at Shearman & Sterling where he practiced for over 7 years as a Senior Associate. Prior to this he trained for more than four years at the start of his career as the principal assistant of one of the world’s top international commercial and investment law arbitrators, Sir David A.R. Williams KNZM QC. During that time, James was involved in over 50 major commercial and investment treaty arbitrations under all of the major arbitral rules involving many of the world’s pre-eminent arbitrators and a broad range of industry sectors.

 

Elizabeth Chan

Elizabeth Chan is a Registered Foreign Lawyer (England and Wales) in Allen & Overy’s Asia-Pacific Arbitration team, based in Hong Kong. She specialises in international commercial arbitration and investment treaty arbitration. Prior to joining Allen & Overy, Elizabeth practised at leading specialist international arbitration practices in London, New York and Hong Kong.

She has represented both investors and foreign governments in arbitrations under many major arbitral rules, seated in many major arbitral seats. She is ranked as a Future Leader of Who’s Who Legal – Arbitration 2022. She obtained her BA/LLB(Hons) from the University of Auckland and her LLM from Yale Law School as a Fulbright Scholar. She is admitted as a Solicitor-Advocate in England and Wales, a New York attorney and a New Zealand barrister/solicitor (non-practising).

 

Michael Greenop

Michael Greenop is a senior associate in Gary Born’s international arbitration practice group at the London office of Wilmer Cutler Pickering Hale and Dorr LLP, specialising in commercial and investment treaty arbitration cases.

Before joining WilmerHale, Michael formerly worked at Quinn Emanuel Urquhart & Sullivan LLP in London under the guidance of Stephen Jagusch QC and as an employed barrister at Bankside Chambers, where he assisted Sir David A.R. Williams KNZM QC with his international arbitration practice. He began his career clerking at Chapman Tripp and Meredith Connell in Auckland.

Michael is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (UK) and AMINZ, as well as a co-founder of Young AMINZ. He has spoken at conferences and his work on arbitration and public international law topics have been published in leading legal publications.
