AMINZ Arbitration Skills Intensive

The course brings together some of New Zealand's top practitioners in the field of arbitration. This course will be of interest to aspiring arbitrators, arbitrators wishing to refresh their knowledge or upskill, and lawyers, counsel and other parties involved in arbitration. Attendees will undertake a range of informative and practical sessions and workshops that will allow them to engage in an arbitral process confidently and effectively.

After the course, attendees will:

  • Be familiar with the main provisions of the Arbitration Act 1996 and its Schedules;

  • Have a basic knowledge of the leading cases and commentaries;

  • Understand the process of a domestic arbitration from a practical perspective; and

  • Have an introductory knowledge of the context and institutions of international arbitration.

Co-directed by AMINZ past President Royden Hindle FAMINZ (Arb) and AMINZ vice-President Nicole Smith FAMINZ (Arb), the programme will include:

  • The legal context and statutory framework for arbitration and an overview of the arbitration industry

  • Obligations of the Tribunal: Jurisdiction and source of powers of the arbitrator

  • Commencement of arbitration; interim measures and emergency arbitrators

  • The appointment and removal of the arbitrator/tribunal

  • Running an arbitration hearing

  • The essentials of arbitration awards

  • The role and powers of the Court in arbitration

  • An introduction to international arbitration

  • Privacy and confidentiality

  • Practical exercises and writing workshops
