  • The role of the FDR mediator: differentiation from social work, counselling and other mediation contexts

  • Boundaries of the role and legal requirements

  • Framework of the FDR package available in Aotearoa NZ

  • Best interests of the child as the underlying philosophy of FDR and how to thread this through the mediation

  • Child inclusive practice

  • Getting the most out of intake and preliminary meetings

  • Parenting plans, agreements, what resolution can look like

  • Common issues raised and how to handle them

  • Boundaries / complaints / supervision and self-care

  • Working effectively with lawyers, support people, voice of child practitioner

  • Using child developmental theory

  • A tikanga Māori lens on family mediation – to be provided by a Māori FDR Practitioner

  • Cross-cultural considerations

  • What to do if parties can’t settle

This training is suitable for those new to the role of FDR mediator or considering moving into the role. For aspiring FDR mediators we encourage you to speak with a supplier in your area first to see if there is the potential of work available.
