Te Wiki o te Reo Māori 2021
September 13 - 19 2021 marks Te Wiki o te Reo Māori - Māori Language Week.
We are acutely aware of the important role te reo plays within the work that we do as an Institute, and as the home of dispute resolution professional across Aotearoa. Dispute resolution should, first and foremost, always be about the people. Appreciating te reo Māori, and the rich culture that this entails, is critical to ensuring people always come first.
The recent #aminz21 conference was testament to that. Over three days, our speakers and attendees were immersed in discussions all rooted in the conference's theme ”He aha te mea nui o te ao? He tangata, he tangata, he tangata." What is the most important thing in the world? It is the people, it is the people, it is the people.
While we collectively celebrate Te Wiki o te Reo Māori 2021, there is still work to do to ensure te reo Māori finds its rightful place within the country's curriculum.
A recent opinion article from Bruce Jepson (Māori Principals' Association) summed this up perfectly. Have a read below. Bonus...if you scroll down the article, you’ll hear from one of our legendary keynote speakers from the #aminz21 conference, Hon Justice Joe Williams speaking on the importance of te reo Māori.
