A Year in Review: Looking back at 2022 with AMINZ
It’s easy to get caught up in the craziness of December and jumping into 2023 planning mode already. But…the Institute has had a big year.
We’ve launched a number of new programmes, welcomed many new members, kickstarted new initiatives, continued our important advocacy work and delivered a full calendar of education and events. Thanks to the input, commitment, and expertise of you, our members, we’ve had a stellar year!
Let’s take a look back.
AMINZ Members continue to be at the forefront of ADR, excelling in their chosen fields and contributing significantly to the growth of the sector. It was a privilege to present numerous awards and recognitions.
Madison Dobie and Diana Qiu were awarded the 2022 AMINZ scholarships
Stuart Robertson, Rebecca Saunders, Kelly Quinn, and Kate Wiseman were awarded Fellowship in Arbitration
We presented our 2022 Big Heart Awards to Hon Paul Heath KC, Peter Whiteside KC, Nicola Hartfield, and Bruce Cottrill. It was fantastic to be able to recognise and celebrate the contributions these four individuals have made to the Institute and its success
Fellow Peter Degerholm was selected to the Committee for the review of NZS 3910. This significant piece of work is due to be released in 2023
Our commitment to ensuring the dispute resolution voice is heard continued with submissions on behalf of our members. These included:
Access to Justice Legal Needs Survey
Dispute Resolution in the Grocery Sector
Independent Review by the New Zealand Law Society on regulating the provision of 'legal services'
Our expansive network of aspiring, new and seasoned practitioners (both in NZ and internationally) continued to grow.
Young AMINZ got well-underway, with the AMINZ Office working closely with the group to enable opportunities for new practitioners to connect with like-minded peers
Members of Te Hunga Rōia Māori o Aotearoa (The Māori Law Society) and the Pacific Lawyers Association (PLA) were invited to the Institute with a discount on membership and education offerings
A number of new members joined, showcasing the growing interest and awareness in Aotearoa's alternative dispute resolution scene
A new Council was formed at the August AGM.
Nicole Smith stepped into the Presidential role and Malcolm Wallace as the Vice-President
Ann Skelton and Kate Wiseman joined the Council and Kate Hesson was re-elected
A fair bit happened in the Office this year!
We launched the AMINZ Mentoring Programme, a new membership benefit designed to enhance the practice and professional lives of both mentors and mentees. So far, so good - with fantastic feedback in the first month of going live
We undertook improvements to our internal processes and systems, making workflows quicker and more efficient
We commenced a review of the Mediation Skills Intensive programme to ensure ongoing best-in-class learning experiences
We sold the Lambton Quay floor, closing the door on a significant era of the Institute and allowing the team to begin reallocating resources to new programmes of work
We farewelled Sue Wells and Sabeena Tsan and welcomed Emma Pitcaithly (Events Coordinator) and Andrew Patterson (Content and Stakeholder Manager). Rachael Douglas was appointed General Manager
We undertook another Member Survey with fantastic feedback. Areas of suggested improvements were identified and new initiatives and actions off the back of these are in the works for 2023
We worked hard to ensure the vast experiences and interests of our members were covered in our education and event offerings. 2022 saw us host:
Arbitration Day, special thanks to Dr Anna Kirk
Royden Hindle, President Nicole Smith and Paul Sills presented the Advanced Arbitration Seminar
We collaborated with Resolution Institute to deliver the online FDR Conference
Ran four AMINZ Mediation Skills Intensive programmes
We reconnected and celebrate in person and the long-awaited AMINZ Gala Dinner
Numerous Network Meetings were delivered by our fantastic Network Convenors. These enabled learning, discussion, and connection within each region. Our Convenors volunteer their time in ideating, planning and delivering these fantastic member opportunities. A special thank you to them all!
